We recently had a portrait client that came to us with a sad and heavy heart. Circumstances in her life had left her with a lot to bear all at once, the worst of which being the loss of her mom.
Now I haven’t lost my mom, but I have lost my dad and I know the pain that brings you. It is one like no other and time never really gets rid of it. But for her, this was fresh, she was still in a state of mourning.
During her makeover, she seemed to have a little fun, she had a small smile for us here and there. But for me that wasn’t enough, I wanted to see that smile I knew she was hiding. I wanted to see that beautiful woman we knew was in there.
The moment she left our makeup chair I was determined I would get that smile, I would get an image of that connection she had inside her.
We went through several outfits, backgrounds and poses and you know what? I got that smile, I got that connection I was looking for and once she saw her images you could see she was in love!
That, my friends, is why I love doing this work. We love showing women their beauty again. Giving them that pep in their step as they walk out our door. It’s a transformation we see happen over and over again and it’s what we live for. The service we give our clients to push them to loving themselves again, is second to none and I am so proud of that!
My friend and I started this business 4 years ago out of an experience she had. She had finally decided she wanted to do something for herself. Something completely unlike her but she wanted the experience.
She wanted to get some gorgeous images of herself to have later in life and hoped to get an experience all about her, one she would be excited to describe to everyone she knows.
Well, she scheduled her appointment and had her session and it was………absolutely awful!
She arrived at the location and instead of an elegant, beautiful place it was cold and uninviting. Cold brick walls and a less than appealing bathroom to change in. She had her hair and makeup done prior and was ready to have her session. But THIS was NOT what she had expected.
The photographer did not engage her. She didn’t show her that she cared at all about her and what she was doing. My friend posed as she was told, made expressions she thought would look good and made it through her session.
In the end, she hated her images. She felt nothing for them. She thought her face looked old and unhappy. They were absolutely not living up to her expectations. Needless to say, she didn’t purchase a single image!
And THAT is where we began. She described her experience to me and how disappointed she was, then she said “we could do this!” So we began planning!
Between my photography skills and her makeup skills, we succeeded! We made our business to revolve around our clients. We do for them in every way. We love our clients and we show it. We love what we do and we show it. We love the way we make our clients feel and THEY show it. It is written on the face of each of their images.
THAT is what my friend wanted. THAT is what we give our clients. THAT is what we can do for you!
This is the mom! Her name is Jennifer. She is a mom, sister, friend, wife, daughter, aunt and is just like any other woman out there in the world, just like you. She has a full time job working with kids and yes she is a special woman.
She spends her day working with and helping teach a room full of young kids then goes home to be with her own. She wants the best for her family and herself. She lives each day for others. She focuses on others’ needs and rarely on herself.
She came to us because she needed and wanted something for herself. Something that made her FEEL like the beautiful woman she is.
We did just that for her. We doted on her and gave her the experience of a day just for her! We got her in our makeup chair and went to work. She was like a model being prepared for a magazine shoot.
We gave her pampering like she has never had. We gave her a beautiful makeover and had some fun doing it. She talked with us about her life and we could see how much she does for everyone else and that made us all the more excited to be able to give this to her.
After about 45 minutes of makeup and laughs we started her session……(Lights, Camera, Action (sort of). Move, this way, look that way, wear this, smile, breathe, relax and let us coach you into the perfect position and we did!
She did so well and loved it so much she glowed! Her smile lit up the room and we made some fabulous images. We also gave her some fabulous memories, both of which will last her lifetime and beyond.

The day I took these images I was focused on getting some beautiful images of a local Senior in High School. I was set on getting images that she and her mother would absolutely love and will cherish forever.
Earlier in the week I had passed this awesome field completely overflowing with this gorgeous red flower clover. All I could think of were images of a beautiful young lady with a glorious sun as a back light. I had my senior and I went for the field.
I was able to get the shot that I had in my head and my clients loved the results. They got some wonderful images in the field and I can’t wait to shoot there again.
About 2 weeks after I captured these images I drove back by that field that had these amazing flowers and the red was completely gone. All that remained was the field of green and where the flowers had been only brown. All that beauty gone so quickly.
As I look back at these images it makes me think and compare that field to the life of this young woman and her mom. During this time of graduation it makes a mom ponder.
She was born as the light of her mom’s life. Her mom loved her and raised her and taught her values that she would need to live her life and grow to raise another as she was raised. But all too quickly the time comes that they leave us.
Like this beautiful field of flowers they are given to us to enjoy and watch. We can only hope as they leave us that we have done what we need to do as parents. That we have given our kids all the information and guidance that they will need to continue on their journey as they make their own way.
It is a time of pride and joy, but also a time of sadness. As my daughter also graduates and leaves the proverbial nest these are my thoughts and prayers.
“Oh I would love to have a session with you but……….. I need to lose 20 pounds, I need to gather up the courage, I need to get more money together, I hate the way I look in photographs, I don’t need any images of myself.”
We have heard excuse after excuse that people offer up to keep from scheduling a shoot with us. And I am certain there are many others to come, but I want to say that none of them are excuse enough.
I say we as women need to EXIST IN PHOTOS! We take pictures of our kids, of our parents, of our spouses and pets, yet we miss out on the idea that we need to be in the images too.
Have you ever thought of what you are leaving behind? Have you ever thought of how it will feel when you are 10 years older, 20 years older or even 50 years older and you look back to find so very few images of the younger versions of you?
Have you thought about what it will be like when you are older and have so little to show your kids and grand kids about how you used to be? So little to show your progression in age, of how you became the you that you will be.
It is time for us to EXIST IN PHOTOS! Your family, your kids, your grand kids and even you deserve to have images with you in them. You all deserve to have absolutely beautiful and gorgeous images of YOU!
There is no need to loose that weight you THINK that you need to loose. You are a thing of beauty as you are. You don’t need to gather courage, you are strong and confident and we will help you. You don’t need more money, we offer payment plans for that. You may hate the way you look, but I promise we can make you love the way you look in your images. You may not thing you need images of yourself, but you do and so does your family.
Your family and you deserve to have images of you that you love. And later when you are older you will have that priceless portrait of YOU in all your beauty. You can have it to show kids and grand kids and even more importantly than that, your family will have those images to cherish for a lifetime once you are gone. This is the most priceless aspect of beautiful images.
It is the emotion behind them. The love that can be shown and held there for many lifetimes to come. Images of those we love are priceless, why else would you take all the phone images you do? Why else would it be so traumatic to lose those pictures when a computer or phone fails? These reasons are also why it is so important to have an actual physical portrait. Something that can’t be lost to a virus infected computer. A beautiful portrait on the wall to show off for a lifetime.
There are so many reasons to get beautiful images of you and to #EXISTINPHOTOGRAPHS, so what exactly are you waiting for? What is your excuse?
Well, that is not a good enough reason. Just do it and EXIST IN PHOTOS!
We are glamour and boudoir portrait photographers BUT sometimes…..yes…..we do families. And this is a family that is dear to my heart, she’s my sister! Yes we don’t always do family sessions, but when we do they are gorgeous!
I have grown to love capturing images in the evening sun. Whether it be the sun beams, a backdrop of the sun in the image or back lit I think they all make beautiful images. I absolutely love the warmth this kind of ‘golden hour’ sun gives. And for this family to be able to have these images forever will be absolutely awesome. This was a fun session and it makes me more open to doing more 🙂
